GPS Tracking & Accuracy: Speed Meets Safety

A GPS collar’s accuracy determines how quickly and precisely it knows your dog’s location and how fast it reacts if they’re nearing a boundary. That’s where Halo’s AlwaysOn™ GPS makes the difference.

Halo Collar never “sleeps” and is continuously analyzing incoming satellite signals to determine its location. It analyzes 20 locations per second with ±1.5 meter accuracy in typical outdoor conditions. Even while indoors, it continuously analyzes satellite signal levels to determine exactly when your dog is truly outdoors, where GPS is accurate, versus just sitting by a window, where GPS is notoriously inaccurate. When your dog goes outside, Halo Collar can lock in its location in just 2–3 seconds by adjusting for indoor errors (drift), and by using Assisted GPS, which pre-loads satellite orbit data over the Internet. This allows accurate tracking to start almost instantly.

SATELLAI, on the other hand, pauses GPS after 24 seconds of inactivity to save power. When your dog moves again, it can take anywhere from 3 seconds to 30 seconds to reestablish its position.  In addition, SATELLAI only analyzes position once per second and has an average outdoor accuracy of around ±13.5 meters. They have no solution for indoor inaccuracies (drift), which then cause major accuracy problems when your dog does go outside..  SATELLAI also does not have Assisted GPS, so it often takes 25+ seconds to get a location after coming outside or starting to move.

Why it matters: Many dogs can sprint at 15–20 mph — roughly 22–29 feet per second — so even a 20–60 second delay in GPS reacquisition can mean your dog has already traveled hundreds of feet beyond your intended safe zone. Halo’s AlwaysOn™ GPS ensures your dog’s fence feedback happens instantly — before they cross the boundary, not after.

SATELLAI’s 5 day battery life sounds impressive, but it comes at the cost of real-time protection, leaving dangerous gaps when your dog moves unexpectedly. Halo’s design prioritizes safety over power saving, offering up to 48 hours of uninterrupted GPS protection and a rapid 1-hour recharge.

Signal Systems & Reception: Precision That Doesn’t Quit

Strong signal performance keeps GPS accurate no matter where your dog roams. Both collars utilize multi-GNSS technology, supporting GPS, Galileo, Beidou, and GLONASS satellite systems for improved signal reception worldwide. Both collars also use a dual-band antenna and dual-frequency GNSS (L1 & L5 bands). However, the implementation differs significantly.

Halo Collar uses proprietary AI-driven software called PrecisionGPS™ to leverage only direct GPS signals and ignore false data from indirect signals (like those that bounce off of buildings, trees and the ground). Halo also analyzes the position and signal strength of incoming satellite data and avoids using low-quality satellites when calculating position. This results in clean, highly accurate location calculation.

SATELLAI uses an older GNSS receiver (same receiver as Halo Collar 3) with no ability to distinguish between high-quality and low-quality satellite signals. By using low-quality satellites accuracy and performance are far worse – especially near your house or obstructions.

Why it matters: Using ‘more’ satellites doesn’t mean better accuracy — only better and cleaner data does. Halo ensures the signals your collar uses to protect your dog are high-quality, resulting in precise and reliable positioning in any environment.

Virtual Fences: Instant Boundaries, Real Confidence

Both collars store virtual fences directly on the device with the use of an app, but how they perform makes all the difference.

Fence Size & Flexibility:
Halo lets you create fences as small as 900 square feet or as large as 768,000 acres, with an unlimited number of fences and unlimited fence posts. It is perfect for urban, suburban and rural yards, as well as travel, they are designed to be set up everywhere you take your dog. With Halo, you can have an unlimited number of fences that can be any shape and size. They can be created with a single tap and are analyzed for effectiveness right in the app – along with specific suggestions to fix them – while you edit them.

SATELLAI supports large zones (up to 100,000 acres) but requires a minimum size of half an acre, making it less ideal for smaller spaces or tighter boundary control. Creating fences is manual with no validation, so you cannot be sure whether it will work properly for you.

Why it matters: GPS fences should be easy to set up and automatically sync with your dog’s collar. You should feel confident that the fence you create in the app works correctly and will reliably keep your dog safe.

Indoor to Outdoors: Instant Accuracy

Response Speed:
Halo reacquires GPS in 2 seconds after a complete signal loss, including being indoors for days. This allows it to enable boundary feedback almost immediately when your dog leaves the house. SATELLAI can take 25 seconds or more, resulting in critical safety delays.

Drift Prevention:
When your dog stops moving, GPS drift can lead to inaccuracies of your dog’s location and cause false alerts. Halo’s motion sensors and AI prevent drift completely, while SATELLAI can drift over 70 meters while indoors, and 3-5 meters outdoors, triggering false alerts or missed breaches.

Why it matters: Most dogs spend much of their time indoors, but when you let your dog out or they run out of the house, you need accurate GPS positioning right away. If the GPS takes 25 seconds to activate or is off by 70 meters, it can put your dog’s safety at risk. GPS must be active and accurate, instant GPS positioning is essential to protect your dog the moment they step outside.

Battery Life: Safety That Never Sleeps

Battery life is important, but how that battery is used is what really matters.

SATELLAI’s 5 day battery life is achieved by shutting off GPS after 24 seconds of inactivity. That means when your dog suddenly gets up and moves, there’s a delay before tracking and fencing resume, which creates a risk to your dog’s safety. To get the full 5 days, SATELLAI also optionally disables location tracking, as well as other shutdown and sleep techniques that disable collar critical safety and usability features.

Halo takes the opposite approach. AlwaysOn™ GPS and AlwaysOn™ connectivity run continuously for up to 48 hours on a single charge, and will let you recharge fully in just one hour.

Why it matters: Halo never goes into “sleep mode” , disables tracking or disconnects from the internet because your dog’s safety and your peace of mind are important every second you are using the collar.

Training & Behavior: Smarter Learning with Positive Reinforcement

The training aspect of any GPS dog fence should not be overlooked or understated. It is extremely important to ensure your dog does not feel scared or confused.

Halo Collar uses patented technology with an internal compass and AI motion detection to know when and which way your dog is moving. Your dog only receives prevention feedback when moving toward danger and it stops the moment they stop or turn around, signaling they’ve done the right thing. This is intuitive to a dog’s way of learning – the command stops when they listen and obey. Then it switches to encouragement feedback, like a whistle, to guide them safely home. This unique, patented system is what makes Halo a truly portable and reliable containment solution your dog can understand. It does not rely on memorizing boundaries, since this is not applicable anywhere outside your yard.

Cesar Millan’s Halo training program builds on this with positive association methods and repetition, not fear-based corrections. The collar uses escalating sound, vibration, or static only as needed to break fixation and refocus attention. Once your dog responds to their command correctly, feedback stops instantly, and positive reinforcement takes over. Halo never gives up keeping your dog from leaving a fence, making it uniquely ‘escape-proof.’

Also, Cesar’s methodology teaches through clear, consistent communication and reward, so your dog can learn quickly and feel confident, without fear or confusion.  After a few days of following the in-app training, the commands become imprinted on your dog’s memory for life.

SATELLAI offers standard correction modes (tone, vibration, static) that simply activate when approaching or crossing the boundary.  For your dog to get back to safety, it relies on your dog memorizing your property and finding its way back on its own with no guidance from the collar. And, if your dog does not find its way back in several seconds, the feedback gives up and your dog ‘escapes’ the fence. SATELLAI also lacks proactive encouragement and guided training methods.

Why it matters: Safety is the number one reason to have a GPS fence, so having a feedback approach that is escape proof is critical. Also, Halo doesn’t just correct behavior, it builds understanding. Over time, your dog learns to respect boundaries naturally and confidently. This not only is intuitive for your dog and far more effective, it is much more humane, safer and makes Halo truly a portable fence.

Activity & Health Tracking: Smarter Data for Safer Dogs

Both collars offer activity tracking, but Halo integrates that data directly with your dog’s training and movement behavior.

Halo Collar monitors and logs daily activity patterns, including time spent active versus resting. This data integrates with the collar’s AlwaysOn™ GPS to provide accurate activity logs based on continuous location sampling. The high-frequency GPS updates create detailed movement patterns that help owners understand their dog’s exercise habits and energy levels throughout the day, including whether those activities occur indoors or outdoors. Halo also integrates prevention and encouragement data for deeper understanding of behavior and progress.

SATELLAI provides daily activity reporting through AI-powered health analytics. The system analyzes activity patterns to deliver insights about your dog’s behavior and movement trends. However, the activity data relies on less frequent GPS updates, which may result in less precise activity logging. The focus is on health analytics, not behavioral feedback.

Why it matters: Halo gives you a complete picture of your dog’s wellbeing by connecting precise activity tracking with real training and behavior data — so you understand not just how active your dog is, but how they’re learning and thriving each day.

Support, Membership & Real Human Help Matters

Both Halo Collar and SATELLAI require subscriptions to access their core GPS fence and tracking features which start at $9.99/month, but the overall value and customer experience are quite different.

Halo’s provides world-class customer support based in the US which is available seven days a week. In the Halo Dog Park you can speak to one of our team members live via in-app or web-based Zoom video by calling in any time or you can pre-schedule a one-on-one. This allows you to show our support team your dog or your app screen with ease, so that we can assist quickly with almost any issue.

SATELLAI’s app provides basic automated assistance, but lacks any form of live support or professional training resources.

Why it matters: Buying and using new technology is not always easy and the purchase of a GPS dog fence is a big decision. With Halo, you have peace of mind knowing there is always a real person available to help.

How is Halo different from other “smart” GPS and tracking dog collars?

Halo is, first and foremost, the safest and most advanced virtual fence for your dog. But Halo offers so much more than any other e-collar. Halo Fences keep your dog safely inside the boundaries that you easily define, and prevents them from leaving (unlike other tracking collars, which only track and notify you when they escape). It also keeps track of the activity levels and exercise that result from the freedom the fence provides. Your Halo Collar prevents, protects, tracks, and trains your dog—and can even guide your dog home.

Is the Halo Collar worth the money?

The Halo Collar provides revolutionary technology at a fraction of the cost of other dog fences. A physical fence can range anywhere from $1,000 to over $10,000 depending on material and length. An in-ground wire fence or an electric dog fence can range from $900 to $2,200 (averaging around $2 per linear foot), and other GPS dog fences like SpotOn cost $999, making the Halo Collar a very affordable dog fence alternative.

How accurate are Halo Fences compared to other “wired” fences?

The Halo Collar's advanced GPS/GNSS system is extremely accurate. It uses the latest geolocation technology and is more accurate than your smart phone. Halo Fences are not created using a wire, so they can't be cut, damaged, and don't need to be installed underground. In additon, Halo Fence posts can be placed anywhere, and are not limited by geography or other obstacles that prevent the installation of a wire.

Will Halo work for my dog?

Halo is a proven system that works on any breed and any age, as long as they are over 5 months old and over 10 lbs. With dog training from Cesar Millan, any dog owner can train their dog on the Halo system. Over 350 breeds and over 200,000 dogs are currently using Halo Collar.

What if my dog escapes the Halo Fence?

If your dog escapes beyond the three levels of protection provided inside your Halo Fences, there are multiple fail-safes outside of your fences that will help protect your dog. You will immediately be notified if your dog has escaped. In addition, with Cesar's expert guidance, you will train your dog to come right back home! Your dog's Halo Collar will use its advanced algorithms to intelligently determine which direction your dog is facing, so that they only receive prevention feedback if they keep running further away from safety, and so they'll never receive a correction while heading home! You can also see your dog's real-time location in the Halo app at all times.

Who will train my dog? How long will that take?

It's highly important that you are the one who trains your dog. Every dog needs a pack leader, so as a pet parent, that pack leader needs to be you! This will not only help with your Halo training, but will build the trust, respect, and love that is essential for a happy life with your dog. The training program is broken down into 5 steps with easy to follow lessons. It will take some practice and repetition. Every dog learns at different speeds, so it may take more or less time. Make sure to be patient with your dog, and they will learn much more quickly!
